Gear4Goals Mission

Our mission is to provide every child the enjoyment, passion, and love of sport.

Gear4Goals

Gear4Goals is a unique program designed to align the need for sport and equipment with the children who require the most attention and resource. Our efforts are directed through community locally to gather new and gently used sports equipment from youth, families, sports organizations, schools, teams, and professional organizations. Our needs for equipment are across all spectrum of sport and include equipment, monetary donation, and coaching skill.

The transportation and delivery of sports equipment can require financial assistance to fund shipping or freight transport via airline. On some of our mission trips, we carry the freight on the air carrier along with our teams. On other occasions, the equipment is sent via the necessary air, water, rail, or truck freight mechanisms with on-ground representatives accessing the equipment and distributing to the teams, schools, and organizations in greatest need.

Our programs have responded to the needs of the children since 2012 with the following successful efforts.

Summer  2012

Over 200 pieces of baseball equipment were provided to children in the Dominican Republic for active play in the region of Santa Domingo.

Fall  2012

Over 1000 pieces of baseball equipment and uniform pieces were provided to the Dominican Republic for active play in the region of Puerta Plata.

Winter  2012

Provided equipment for 500 children in the Kimana Rift Valley of Kenya. Equipment provided included baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, clothing, hats, and jerseys.

Spring   2013

Gear4Goals has partnered with local organization Working Together to provide Taekwondo equipment for the students who have had only two pieces of sparring gear for nearly three years. With G4G's efforts, Working Together now has enough for each of the children to use and actively participate to improve their skills and confidence. Working Together is a local organization of the North Shore of Chicago that provides resources and classes to Hispanic children and families through a powerful cooperative effort. To learn more about Working Together visit these recent articles in the Chicago Tribune.

Spring   2013

Over 250 pieces of sport equipment will be delivered to the Dominican Republic through one of associate organizations. Equipment will be given to children in Santa Domingo and surrounding rural communities.

Gear4Goals provided our compassion associate, Mr. Dan Borris, with equipment for children in Cuba. Mr. Borris is one of many caring people who choose to carry along extra equipment to give generously to children in need. The compassionate associate program provides friends of G4G with sports gear to hand out to children in schools, orphanages, or in the streets. For information about how you can become a compassionate associate, contact our board of directors via email from our contact page.

Gear4Goals (G4G) partnered with new compassion partners, Gift in Kind and Bright Hope to send sports equipment to Bolivia for children's play. Gift in Kind and Bright Hope provided over 20,000 pounds of needed resources in a large shipment container and now G4G will become a regular partner providing equipment later in the year to the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and Costa Rica.

Gear4Goals was proud to host a mega gear drive with the Schaumburg Boomers Baseball organization in Schaumburg, Illinois. The G4G volunteer team worked with fans to collect over 1000 pieces of invaluable sports items for our children we serve. G4G also hosted a flash mob during the seventh inning stretch. Watch the video and enjoy.

We also provided over 500 pieces of sports gear to children in Bolivia through our Compassion Partner Gift in Kind.

Summer  2013 - G4G Brings Russian Children Joy and Hop

Gear4Goals Compassion Associate Mr. Larry Heller and his team traveled to Russia to provide hope and opportunity to children. Children were able to learn the game of baseball and other sports for the first time. Individual instruction was provided so children could really begin to play and enjoy baseball and other sports. Many of these children live in orphanages and the time and sports gear make them feel valued and special.

Compassion Associate Ms. Charlotte Austin provided Gear for Goals equipment to children in an orphanage she volunteers for in Guatemala. Children loved playing with the new gear and experienced a completely new level of sport, hope, and enjoyment.

Our Compassion Partner Gift in Kind and Willow Creek Church traveled to serve in Guatemala and we provided sports equipment for over 500 children in the tiny hill villages to play and enjoy sport. Children were provided with the first opportunity to play the game of baseball in this region and now are enjoying the game and love the competition and learning sport offers.

Fall   2013 - G4G Bringing Joy to El Salvador with Gift in Kind Partners

Gear4Goals team loaded a 14,000 pound container heading for El Salvador holding sports gear, playground equipment, school desks, medical equipment, and other vital items needed. When the container arrives trained and skilled teams will unpack and disseminate these valuable resources to the families and children in need. Sports gear items will be used immediately once they are unpacked and put in the hands of the children.

Winter  2013

G4G Sports returns to Kenya and introduces "One Gives One"

During our December 2013 mission to Kenya we were pleased to welcome Mr. Austin Bruhl, Mr. Todd Love Ball Jr., and Dr. Jeff Kahrs to come alongside our strong teams of doctors and educators who traveled to Kenya to serve the needs of the under-resourced in the Kimana Rift Valley. Visiting schools, villages, and community centers in this region we provided sports equipment including jump ropes, Frisbees, soccer balls, footballs, baseball mitts and bats, hats, uniforms, cleats, and other vital equipment for the thousands of children who live in this region.

In addition we secured land to build the first baseball field in the area, Mt. Kilimanjaro Baseball Field. More good news also came from officials in Nairobi and Meru regarding Little League Baseball and Major League Baseball interest in this region of East Africa. Officials from Little League and Major League Baseball have intense interest in developing young talent in this area and we were invited to send a local Kenyan representative to Uganda to study with Major League Baseball coaches and Little League Officials. Mr. Joseph Nkaapa, a local Maasai and leader of the area, has graciously accepted a post to work with Gear4Goals project of Dreamweaver International. Mr. Nkaapa will receive instruction and training and then return to the area to work with board member, Mr. Ken Taylor, to build Mt. Kilimanjaro Baseball Field.

In addition, Gear4Goals provided equipment for Kenya Little League and several other organizations in distant villages of Kenya to further extend the reach of impact in the area.

The "One Gives One" campaign was a giant success with children receiving G4G soccer balls and baseballs. The G4G soccer balls feature the words SPORT, HOPE, and OPPORTUNITY to signify the tremendous role sport has in creating hope around the world among the most under-resourced children. Our G4G sports items are available for purchase on our sport web site: g4gsports.org/

Gear4Goals working with compassion partner,

Cool Learning Experience, to inspire kids.

Steve Heaviland has created a dynamic program for youth in Waukegan,IL that incorporates the experiences of outdoor environmental education and sports to inspire creativity in youth.

Calling his program, Cool Learning Experience, the CLE has four core principles;

     1) support families

     2) educate children

     3) promote stewardship

     4) build community

Taking kids into nature and helping them discover things they never appreciated before and investigating using science, they are able to help children tap into new areas of learning and possibility.  In addition, Steve uses his expertise as a tennis pro to introduce children to the game of tennis who would otherwise never experience this fun and exhilarating game.

Fall 2014

Gear4Goals partnered with local coaches in the Dominican Republic to deliver over $30,000 in sports items to help thousands of children realize their dreams.  Gear4Goals created a parent child event and gave every parent a mitt, a ball, and a bat to give their child.  Prior to the event, local coaches asked the parents to stand in the center of a large circle of the players holding hands.  Then the coaches and Gear for Goals leaders prayed for the parents and blessed them, thanking them for their hard work and dedication to raise their children.  Gear4Goals has provided over 25,000 children in the D.R. with sports gear and musical instruments.  Gear for Goals is thankful for their compassion partners, Gift in Kind Ministry and ChiroMission for helping them to deliver sports gear to children.

GOLF INTRODUCED IN LATIN AMERICA

Working with local compassion partner Juan Espejo, Gear4Goals has introduced golf to Latin America.  Prior to the Fall 2014 trip to the Dominican Republic, Dr. Warren Bruhl and Espejo created golf instruction videos in Spanish and then uploaded the films onto YouTube.  Then Bruhl and other leaders brought players to the local beach and taught them how to play golf on the beach.  Golf was originally created on the beach in Scotland and evolved to play on grass.  Bruhl and Espejo believe there are incredible opportunities ahead to bring golf to children in Latin America and are anxious to develop their skills in the coming years.

Winter 2014

Gear4Goals project is pleased to announce the formation of Mt. Kilimanjaro Little League.  Introducing baseball into the Kimana Rift Valley of Kenya in 2012, Gear4Goals has supported local leadership and hired coaches to educate youth.  Coaches visit local schools daily to teach baseball and teach life skills.  In addition, Mt. Kilimanjaro Little League now has created the first baseball field in the shadows of Mt. Kilimanjaro.  Gear for Goals would like to thank Mr. Joseph Nkaapa for his generosity and support to loan use of his lands in the town of Kimana to help inspire local youth.  Gear4Goals provided over 500 lbs of sport and hope to children on this recent trip and continues to grow sports programs in Kenya.

February 2015

Camelot School and Gear for Goals – a Community Partnership

Camelot Hoffman Estates 2015 Sports Equipment Drive

This February and March, Camelot of Hoffman Estates was excited to participate in a Gear for Goals drive, collecting used sports equipment to be donated to children in areas of need.  Formed in 2012 by Dr. Warren Bruhl, Gear4Goals is an organization which works with Bright Hope International- a non-profit dedicated to helping those in need around the world.

Our student leader group, The Lion’s Club, collected used sports equipment and visited Bright Hope’s warehouse in Hoffman Estates.  At the warehouse, the students received a tour, stepped foot in an example home, organized donated jerseys, and took inventory of the items collected from Camelot Hoffman Estates.  The school was able to donate three full bins of items such as shoes, tennis rackets, volleyballs, and jump-ropes.  Together, Camelot of and Gear4Goals formed a community partnership.  Dr. Bruhl let our students know they are needed, giving them a sense of teamwork and accomplishment.

The ultimate goal is to make this an annual or semi-annual event between Camelot Schools and Gear4Goals.  Along with frequent trips to Africa and South America, Dr. Bruhl sees a unique opportunity.  “With families traveling during spring, summer, and winter breaks, Gear4Goals has an opportunity to assist those families in taking sports equipment with them to donate around the world. “

“There’s always need.  Last week we went to Bolivia and took all of our soccer gear- shoes, cleats, jerseys, and soccer balls.  So now we’re looking for more.”

-Joe Nellis, High School Teacher

“I learned about their homes and how people in Kenya live.  It feels good that I can help kids play sports around the world.” – Josh Tomagan, 7th Grader at Camelot Hoffman Estates.

Gear4Goals executive director, Dr. Warren Bruhl and volunteer Mr. Lillo Furca, traveled to Patzun, Guatemala to provide natural healing care and sports equipment/instruction.  Gear4Goals provided over 250 lbs of resources and taught local leaders and youth how to play baseball.

March 2015

Ms. Kelly Moretta and her daughter took 100 lbs of sporting items during their Spring break vacation to Mexico as a compassion associate.  Kelly said, "this was one of the coolest experiences I have ever had bringing this equipment to the children."

Many thanks to our donors who make this possible.
